The community of Watertown is continuing to mourn the heartbreaking loss of 2-year-old Aurora Wiles, whose life was tragically cut short in December 2024 under devastating circumstances that have now led to a prison sentence for the man responsible.
Authorities confirmed that Thomas Rose II, 36, has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with Aurora’s death. The sentence was handed down in Jefferson County Court, bringing a measure of legal closure to a case that deeply affected the local community.
Aurora Wiles was found unresponsive on the morning of December 6, 2024, inside an apartment on State Street where she had been living with her mother, Sarah Waterman, and Rose. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but despite efforts to save her, the young child was pronounced dead.
An autopsy later revealed that Aurora died from blunt force trauma, with investigators determining that she had suffered severe internal injuries. According to court findings, the injuries were the result of repeated blows that caused internal bleeding, leading to her death.
The case shocked the Watertown community, not only because of the young age of the victim but also due to the circumstances surrounding her final moments. Residents and loved ones were left grappling with grief and disbelief as details emerged during the investigation.

Aurora’s mother, Sarah Waterman, 24, also faced charges and previously pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child. Her role in the events added another layer of sorrow to an already tragic case.
Though the court’s decision brings a level of accountability, it does little to ease the pain felt by those who mourn Aurora’s loss. She is remembered as an innocent child whose life held promise and joy, taken far too soon.
Her story has left a lasting impact, serving as a somber reminder of the importance of protecting the most vulnerable. In the hearts of many, Aurora Wiles will not be remembered for the tragedy that ended her life, but for the life she deserved to live.
May she rest in peace.
